
Anambra state joined the global community to mark the International Day of Co-operatives at Jerome Udorji Secretariat complex,Awka on July 5,2025.
The event,hosted by the Ministry of Industry, brought together co-operative societies, entrepreneurs and stakeholders to celebrate the role of co-operatives in building inclusive and sustainable economic solutions.
Represented by the Commissioner for Industry, Hon.Christian Udechukwu, Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo reaffirmed the administration’s unwavering commitment to strengthening co-operative societies as vital tools for inclusive and sustainable development in Anambra State. He emphasized that co-operatives remain a strategic vehicle for achieving the goals of the Solution Agenda,especially in grassroots empowerment and wealth creation,aligning with this year’s theme, “Co-operatives: Driving Inclusive and Sustainable Solutions for a Better World.”
Udechukwu further called on Ndi Anambra to remain active participants in the ongoing transformation of the state. He reminded the gathering that the forthcoming gubernatorial election is a crucial opportunity to consolidate on the gains of the Solution Government. “Let us support the continuity of good governance with our voices,our actions and our votes,” he charged.
Speaking at the event, Managing Director/CEO of Anambra Small Business Agency(ASBA), Clement Chukwuka, shared practical insights on “Financing Co-operatives: A Case Study of ASBA.” He outlined ASBA’s structured financial support models, highlighting the SME funding category (up to ₦50 million) and the Micro category (up to ₦5 million), the latter being particularly accessible to co-operatives. He also noted that many co-operatives miss out on funding due to lack of formal registration and documentation.
Chukwuka spotlighted several impactful schemes, including the IGWEBUIKE Micro Co-operative Solution Scheme, ASBA/Solution One Youth Two Skill working capital and the Civil Servants Solution Entrepreneurship Loan Scheme. These initiatives enable groups of ten to access funds, combine individual strengths and prepare for economic self-reliance. He commended the Governor for supporting youth-focused programs with grants and subsidized loans, while noting the over ₦800 million already invested in agricultural value chains across the state.
Dr Ogochukwu Soludo, President of Co-operative Federation of Anambra state(COFAS),in his speech emphasized the urgent need to reposition the Co-operative sector for greater efficiency and impact. He highlighted COFAS renewed mandate to redeem,revitalize and reposition co-operative societies across the state through membership validation,proper registration and accountability audits.
According to him,the action plan aims to restore credibility,ensure transparency and harness the full potential of co-operatives in driving inclusive economic growth in Anambra.
